FilmSlop

About FilmSlop

FilmSlop is a film review website. They believe that what makes cinema special is the slop. Cinema is so often experienced at home via bootlegs, camrips, and 240p YouTube uploads. These imperfections and depictions of the human condition mirrored back to us on the screen are what stay with us and inform our connections to film.

FilmSlop needed a fun, light hearted brand identity and a template for social media posts in order to have a cohesive looking feed.

Logo

I had to incorporate the element of a splat into the logo and think of a new typeface to use. I gave the options of New Nord Wide, Skia, and Ohno Blazeface. I wanted to go for a bold typeface as I knew I would have to incorporate a splat into it. Using a thin typeface would mean the splat could look too overpowering. The FilmSlop team favoured New Nord Wide, so it was now time to incorporate the splat into the logo.

Final logo

Repeated pattern of the words 'Film' and 'Slip' in green and black text, with a film reel icon dripping with black liquid between the words.

Spool design with different greens

The final logo design aimed to stray away from obvious iconography from the film industry, such as the previously used film spool. This is because 'Film' is already in the name of the website, so it does not need to be shown that film is involved through imagery. We focussed more on the splat element in order to give FilmSlop a fun, lighthearted look. This logo incorporates the splat in a fun way whilst still ensuring legibility. The 'F' also incorporates sprockets found in film reels. This is a subtle reference to film and is not so promiment, unlike the spool in the previous logo.

Instagram posts

Split image showing a movie poster on the left and a woman on a payphone on the right. The poster has green text saying 'ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER' over a scene of a young boy with a large gun. The woman on the right is using a payphone inside a bus or train, with a serious expression.

FilmSlop primarly post on Instagram. However, they had no consistent look to their posts, making their page look discoordinated. Taking elements from the new logo, I created a new post template.

Review posts

The title of the film is changed to the same green as the logo. This matches the border and extra elements around the post. Whether the post is a review, interview, or feature, it is written at the bottom rather than underneath the title to avoid overcrowding. The 'FilmSlop Presents' asset at the top is changed from black to cream depending on the colour of the image. The typeface used is Lato, which is the same as the FilmSlop website.

Digital posters for an interview with Nellie Kluz. The first poster features a woman with long straight hair, wearing a pink cardigan over a white shirt, smiling, and has the title 'Interview with Nellie Kluz' at the top. The second poster shows a close-up of a young woman with blonde hair, outdoors in a natural setting, with text describing the Wisconsin Dells, also called 'The Waterpark Capital of the World,' mentioning its tourism, waterparks, and nature trails.
